Consent for attendance at the Spelling Bee events

Each child in your team needs parental or guardian consent for attendance at the Spelling Bee events, together with permission for his or her image and details to be used for publicity purposes. For your convenience, we have created a form that you may like to use.

Click here to download the parental consent form.

As organisers, we need to hold copies of the publicity and attendance forms for each pupil in your team. Please send copies of all forms to us by Friday, February 20, 2009 to the following address Times Spelling Bee Publicity Approval, c/o The Rapport Group, Epic House, 128 Fulwell Road, Teddington, Middlesex, TW11 0RQ. Please bring a copy of the form for each pupil in your team with you to the event.

The live spelling heats will be exciting and entertaining events. Families and friends of participating pupils are welcome to come and watch but please bear in mind that we have to restrict each school to ten guests including team members.

Hundreds of schools have participated in the Championship, which is now in its third year. Teachers tell us that the Championship provides an excellent focal point to highlight the importance of spelling in school and motivates children to practise. We are thrilled to see more and more schools taking part each year.

Schools are invited to put forward a team of three pupils (plus a reserve) of their best spellers to compete with other schools up and down the country.

The 2011 Spelling Bee Championship is open to full-time pupils who will turn 12 years old between September 1, 2010 and August 31, 2011. Schools in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are welcome to participate.

The deadline for schools to enter is Friday, December 10, 2010. But schools will have plenty of time to decide which children to select for their team and represent their school. Schools will need to submit the names of their team members by March 2011.

'The Times Spelling Bee is the Olympics of English. I am a huge fan of this compelling competition.'
Michael Gove
Secretary of State for Education

Live school team spelling contests

The Championship starts in March 2011 when schools go head to head in live local knockout spelling heats. The winning teams will then progress to the Semi-Finals, which will take place in May. The climax will be the Grand Final, which will be held in London in June 2011. This will be a high-profile event featured in The Times newspaper and on Times Online.

The Times is a committed supporter of standards of English and the aim of the Championship is to make spelling fun and to help teachers to raise the profile of spelling and develop the talents of their students.
