Spelling Bee Championship

After ten exciting weeks, the Grand Final of The Times Spelling Bee was held in London on June 23. It was a tough competition with the UK's top ten spelling teams going head to head for the title. Congratulations to St Martin's School from Northwood, whose spellers were crowned The Times Spelling Bee Champions 2009.

James Harding

"Spelling is many things, but rarely fun. It can be frustrating, surprising and illogical. It is also important. English is the country's gift to the world and its home-grown headache. We hope the Spelling Bee will help young people to learn while enjoying a great team-based competition. All the best of luck.”

Editor of The Times

Ed Balls

“I am delighted that The Times has taken the initiative to launch a national Spelling Bee competition. Good spelling forms an essential part of the curriculum and The Times competition looks like it will be a lot of fun. I wish all the children who take part the best of luck."
